Cheap shots and slap shots

4/23/12 9:44 PM

I’m not sure how all of you feel, but to me this spring semester flew by. As of May 11, I will officially be a junior in college. It seems like just yesterday I parked my car in the back of McHale to be greeted by strangers dressed as sailors and willing to carry all of my belongings to my new home. So enough about my nostalgia of becoming a grown up and on to what has me ‘boiling’ this week. As I sat in front of my television watching the NHL playoff game between Philadelphia and Pittsburgh, two things occurred to me. The first, obvious to those who know me, was I care way too much about the outcomes of games. The second reason I will save until later in this column. Trust me, you will want to keep reading. I definitely get worked up when watching games on television and...

US Soccer Points

4/10/12 9:26 AM

Let me start off by saying I am far from a soccer expert, far from a die-hard soccer fan, but I am a citizen of the United States.    Although the United States isn’t exactly known for it’s soccer, the Americans have qualified for the Olympic Games in every attempt but three.    Unfortunately the “futbol” fans in the States won’t be able to watch their country take on the world in the summer Olympics to be held in London this summer. You can now add 2012 to 2004 and 1976 as the collection of years the United States soccer team has failed to qualify for the Olympic Summer Games.    Am I shocked? Well yes. The reason I am shocked is, because of how it happened. After 90 minutes of soccer the Americans held a 3-2 lead. However, stoppage time proved...

Peyton Manning

3/26/12 5:49 PM

Last Monday Peyton Manning picked the Denver Broncos as his next football destination. It was an attractive place for Manning, considering John Elway calls most of the shots in the front office these days. Elway wanted Manning and he wanted him bad. Well he got him, but now there is just one question. What’s next for Tim Tebow? You remember, the guy who pretty much single-handedly took the Broncos to the playoffs last season? The man Elway praised for his leadership qualities and his will to win in January? Well, now Tebow finds himself unofficially in the back seat staring at the newest member of the Broncos in Manning. Although I do not blame Elway for making this move, I do question how he handled it. Shortly following the 2011-2012 NFL season, Elway went out of his way to...

Knicks sensation "Lin-tastic"

2/27/12 2:29 PM

All-Star teams never work. There aren’t enough basketballs on the court for all of the scorers. Jeremy Lin is a just a fad. J.R. Smith will destroy any team chemistry the Knicks may have. These are all examples of what Knicks fans have been hearing from their critics. On February 19, the Knicks proved some of these critics wrong, but not all of them. J.R. Smith took some jump shots before the game started and despite some doubt, he did play in the game against the Dallas Mavericks. Also, he looked like the J.R. Smith who can actually help a team and not help destroy it. The remarkable thing about Smith’s performance in his first game as a Knick wasn’t only scoring 15 points. He did this without even practicing with his new team. Smith joined the Knicks...

Super bowl legacy list

2/13/12 5:49 PM

Super Bowl XLVI fell almost in conjunction with Groundhog’s Day this year, but unlike Punxsutawney Phil, Eli Manning officially stepped out of his familial shadow by winning a second Super Bowl ring. Eli is the youngest of the Manning triple threat, which includes his father Archie and older brother Peyton. Eli, however, is beginning a legacy of his own and will no longer be referred to as Peyton’s little brother or Archie’s less successful son. Instead, he is now one of the elite quarterbacks in the NFL. He took a team with a mediocre record and turned them into a Super Bowl team. In fact, according to a poll on the Los Angeles Times website, Manning is the league’s best quarterback. Not Peyton, but Eli. Peyton also made the list, but was a heavy...
