MU students made the most of Homecoming events even though foul weather delayed or cancelled some of the happenings.
The rain didn’t stop the annual Talent Show, the crowning of King and Queen, the Parade of Champions, Residence Hall Olympics, Festival of the Rings, Casino Night and Battle of Olympians Volleyball Tournament.
Organizers of the talent show, held September 26 in the renovated Walsh Auditorium, found some technical glitches with the new sound system, but show went on.
Various acts took the stage, including Evolution of Boy Bands, a group of students who reenacted portions of music videos from past bands such as N’Sync, Hanson and the Jonas Brothers. The “YES” Dance by the new MU Dance Team and other solo performances rocked the crowd, and the night ended with Stasis, a band from Bangor, PA.
“Evolution of Boy Bands was definitely my favorite performance,” said freshman Alyssa Cipriano.
Freshman Kayci Konopki was happy she didn’t miss it. “The talent show was very entertaining and it was a good time,” she said.
It rained on the parade. Literally. The Parade of Champions on Sept. 27 still drew a spirited crowd. Students donned Uggs and rain boots to stay dry and MU attire to show school spirit. Students decorated the floats, which represented the cheerleaders, The Circle of Friends program and the Homecoming court. They were accompanied by fire trucks and police cars.
The wax hand stand at the Festival of the Rings was a hit. The festival offered many stands, including crafts, Mary Kay products, Rock Band video games, gift baskets, and a money vault.
The dining hall was transformed into a casino, called Casino at the Coliseum. Attendees say it was a joyful event for students and parents, and a $1 admission raised funds for the American Center Society. Those who attended received tickets for prizes and faculty and staff members dressed in Roman attire acted as dealers for traditional casino games.
Rainy weather forced the volleyball tournament to be moved inside the Anderson Sports Center. Various teams competed for the prize dinner with President MacDowell. The scheduled mud wrestling was cancelled.
As students enjoyed Homecoming festivities, prospective students and parents attended Open House.
“I really didn't like the weather, but I thought the fair was nice. I enjoy seeing the young enjoying themselves,” said parent Debby O'Reilly, who was touring the school.
