Despite the spreading fear of the H1N1 virus, or swine flu, donors did not hesitate to give blood at the Red Cross Blood Drive held in the Sandy & Marlene Insalaco Hall Wednesday, Sept. 29. Halfway through the drive, about 70 donors had already given blood with a hallway lined with people well on the way. Almost 100 donors helped the cause.
“It helps. I had a family member who needed blood once. It feels good to make a difference,” said junior Lori Busch.
Some students who still felt charitable had other reasons for giving. “I’m just doing it to help out. Plus, I’m getting extra credit for a class,” said freshman Ryan Hassick.
Organizers anticipated the blood drive to be less successful than those in the past due to the swine flu, but many people enthusiastically donated blood.
“It’s been very successful. There hasn’t been a problem with our donors and swine flu. Other areas we’ve held our drives have had higher numbers of those with swine flu. Misericordia is one of the better campuses we’ve been to,” said Linda Kiddish LPN, board certified phlebotomist and Red Cross team supervisor.
MU officials say it is important for all members of the MU community to follow basic hygiene and hand washing. Students are encouraged to keep their environments clean to prevent the spread of H1N1.
