Students are settling in Alumnae Hall, the oldest dorm on campus, after the building’s complete interior makeover.
Before construction, students complained about the building’s lack of amenities.
Sophomore Sarah Kaufman was a resident before the renovations, and she believes the work is a big improvement. “It was nice to walk in on move-in day and nothing was wrong,” she says. “Everything was new.”
Kaufman says during her move-in day last year, her Resident Advisor (RA) had to point out the flaws in her room. She says the RA told her this was normal, and it wasn’t just her room. Doors were missing on closets and the sink cabinet doors were falling off of the hinges.
Kaufman says the only flaw now is a shortage of storage. The old furniture in the rooms offered more shelves and drawers, she says, but this is only a minor flaw.
New resident sophomore Browning Sterner says he is satisfied with the living conditions. Sterner thinks the stairs could use some work, but only because that part of construction remains untouched. Some of the stairs are a little wobbly, but it is not serious, he says.
Students can enjoy new lounges on the second, third, and fourth floors which each offer a flat screen TV and wireless Internet service. A separate study area is available off of the main lounge looking out over Rosen Plaza. The second and fourth floors also feature a complete kitchen area with a full size stove and refridgerator.
“The lounges are nice,” Sterner says. “The only one thing I would change is that they put in a light switch so we can turn off the lights when we watch a movie.”
Students say refinements such as cable service in all rooms would be a nice—but not necessary—addition, but overall students says they are pleased with the remodeled Alumnae Hall.
