Freshman government is working on class projects and fundraisers.

The freshman government is a club based organization that is made up of several students who are all striving for a common goal. The students involved in the club were appointed in order to carry through with various projects in order to help raise money for the freshman class. During this process the freshman government will also become involved with the surrounding community as well.

The goal is to raise funds for the class gift, which will be $2,012, representing the year the class will graduate. The club will also raise funds for the Harvest Ball.

Each member of the club contributes ideas to their advisor Tiffany Coveney, for approval. Coveney also serves as Alternative Learner Project Coordinator for MU. “I’m there to facilitate meetings and to help out as much as I can. I have to make sure they are going in the right direction.”

Members may be freshman, but they are gaining leadership experience that will help them in the future. Each student representative has a say about different fundraisers and projects. “I needed a new challenge and I always had some kind of leadership role in the past. I want to go into pre-law so a political background is a good way to start,” said Student Government President Holly Manning.

The club has many plans in the works. The first is to have freshmen design t-shirts with logos of their choice. Freshman government will hold an open mic night where people will be able to vote for their favorite design. Freshmen will be able to buy the t-shirt they chose as a fundraiser benefitting their class.

Members are also working on a public service project. The project includes joining with the Diversity Club to hold a Senior Prom at the Mercy Center for senior citizens. The theme for the prom is old Hollywood. Members say their plans have not yet been finalized. “I think we will have some fundraisers and activities accomplished by the end of this semester,” Coveney said.

“We just started this semester but we have some plans that we are working on for the future,” Manning said. “One of the projects we were hoping to work on is a public service project with the Diversity Club but we don’t know if our plans will work out now.”

Each member must devote time to ensure that freshman government can move according to schedule. “I have to run the meetings and come up with ideas along with the rest of the members of government. Also, I have to make sure that the class holds enough fundraisers so we are able to accomplish the tasks that we need to get done within the next four years,” said Manning.

Some freshmen say they’d like to see government take steps to make campus more lively. “We need to have more activities during the week. It gets really boring on campus sometimes,” said freshman Amanda Pernot.

Each member of the freshman government was chosen by their peers through a ballot system last November. Members of freshman government are Holly Manning, President; Aimee DiLucido, Vice President; Jessica Bealer, Secretary; Jonathan Brown, Treasurer, and Kyle Katchur, Activities Coordinator. The positions in this club are not permanent and people can run in following years if they feel the current officeholder is not doing a good enough job.

The freshman government has begun discussing projects and events that will be held on campus to benefit the class of 2012.
