The Pennsylvania Newspaper Association (PNA) awarded Misericordia University’s student newspaper, The Highlander, second place in the Collegiate Keystone Press Awards. First place went to LaSalle University and honorable mention to Temple University.

The award is the result of ongoing health care coverage published in the Highlander in advance of the newspaper’s first Health Care Summit in April, 2008. This event was spurred by health related series written by Amanda Janiga, last year’s print editor, and Jennifer Gomez, last year’s copy chief.

The current student editors as well as last year’s editors will attend the annual PNA conference in April to receive the award.

The Highlander has also been recognized for journalism excellence by the American Scholastic Press Association, which awarded The Highlander First Place with Special Merit in 2008 and Second Place in 2007.

The Highlander has been published since 2001 by student journalists at Misericordia. The bi-weekly publication provides features, investigative reporting, columns, sports and general news coverage for the college community during the academic year.
