As part of the Northeast Pennsylvania Employment Consortium [NPEC], MU and other private colleges in Northeast Pennsylvania have set up a series of informational tours at local companies to provide opportunities for students to answer questions, make contacts and familiarize themselves with local businesses.
Businesses include Pennstar Bank, Prudential, Sallie Mae and many others. Tours are free for students and consist of information sessions, question and answer sessions and physical tours of the companies and their departments. Students are advised to bring their resumes, as many of these companies will accept resumes during the sessions.
Bernadette Rushmer, director of the Insalaco Center for Career Development, encourages students to take advantage of this opportunity to meet with local business professionals.
“It is a great way for students to network with professionals in the financial services industry, learn more about career [and] internship opportunities at the employer sites and learn more about the industry as a whole.
"Employers are also enthusiastic about meeting with local students. “The employers are looking forward to meeting with students and letting them know about their education,” said Rushmer.
Christine Krokos, the NPEC representative for MU, is optimistic about the potential for results. “The tours are an opportunity for students to network with potential employers for full-time, part-time and internship positions. Students will be able to meet with human resource representatives and corporate leaders,” she said.
According to Rushmer and Krokos, the tours are a collaborative effort among all of the schools who participate in NPEC, a consortium of the career centers at regional private colleges. NPEC worked to “provide this professional development opportunity to students” after receiving a grant through the Wall Street West Initiative, said Krokos.
Interested students can stop by the Insalaco Center for Career Development on the first floor of McAuley Hall to sign up for a tour at a company of their choice.
