A new skate park offers MU students a place to enjoy extreme sports.
Northeast Pennsylvania Skate Park Alliance (NPSPA) held the first “Sk8tacular” as a benefit to raise money for a free public concrete skate park in Hanover Township, September 13.
The benefit featured live entertainment and new skate ramps. Many local hardcore bands such as The Cutters, Strength for a Reason, Freeze Up and Murphy’s Law performed underneath the pavilion of the Ashley Firemen’s Grounds. Several local tattoo and piercing establishments were also on hand to offer their services and vintage clothing booths, a money wheel, a raffle and a dunk tank gave people a chance to spend—and win—cash.
Many skaters came out to meet professional skateboarders AJ Kohn and JJ O’Donnell. O’Donnell, a former resident of Nanticoke PA, has a strong following in this area. The professionals gave the young skaters an opportunity to sample new products, such as the new performance tip skateboards. O’Donnell and Kohn also demonstrated skate tricks and distributed their business cards for oneskateboardco.com, so skaters can learn more about the products and tricks.
Attendees had mixed reasons for attending NPSPA’s Sk8tacular. “I came out to support my friend who is in one of the bands playing today. But, I think it’s a great benefit for kids who need a place to skate,” said Brett Miles of Hanover Township.
Other attendees were disappointed by the $10 admission fee. “I feel that admission charge was a little steep,” said Kevin Williamson of Hanover Township.
NPSPA is a non-profit associated created to help support youth by providing safe, designated areas for extreme sports as performing art and to help encourage a more active, healthy lifestyle, according to NPSPA’s website.
NPSPA is seeking donations of both money and labor to help get the skate park started. Tax-deductible contributions can be made to NEPA Skate Park Alliance, 23 Idlewood Drive, Dallas, PA, 18612.
