MU’s Peer Advocates are sponsoring another holiday season of Wish Upon A Star. The program involves MU’s campus to help the less fortunate around the holiday season.

Wish Upon A Star is a very popular program on campus and stars go quickly. Students, faculty, and teams partake in the event to help others out. Peer Advocate Steve Peet thinks this program is different from other holiday gift collecting programs.

“I think the one thing people really like about this program is that they have a choice, they can look through the tree and find star they connect to personally,” says Peet.

The stars have names on them, and while preserving anonymity, students can still know what the gender, age, or how big the family they are helping.

After choosing a star students sign an agreement saying that they will provide a gift for the person of choice and will have it in by Dec. 5. Peer Advocates have been hosting the Wish Upon A Star program for years and plans on keeping the tradition for many more years to come.

Peer Advocate Kathryn Wallace thinks Wish Upon A Star is an important program at MU. “Our goal is to help the less fortunate, like the parents that can’t provide their children with what they want for Christmas,” Wallace says. “Even for other people, because we do have older people too, just so they can have a good Christmas.”

Last year, Peer Advocates collected 100 gifts for individuals in need of a gift throughout the Wilkes-Barre and Dallas area. Every year they have a goal of assigning at least 100 stars to help the less fortunate, such as parents with lower incomes who can provide Christmas gifts for their children.

Peer Advocates are on campus to educate, advocate and do service. They are a group of students who look to give a voice to those without one. Through out the semester they do educational programs such as FYE, service projects, and awareness such as the breast cancer awareness ribb
