Cougar Sports Wrap-Up

Men's

Baseball
The men’s baseball team finished 22-18 overall. Standouts Mike Murphy and Nate Newman were first team All-Freedom selections to the Middle Atlantic States Collegiate Athletic Corporation all-conference teams.

Basketball
The Cougars finished 11-14 (5-11) in their first season in the Freedom Conference. Vinny Baumunk and Dom DelPrete were named to the Laurel Line All-Tournament Team. Baumunk finished his career with 1,455 points -- fourth all time at MU. Baumunk was named team Most Valuable Player (MVP) for the second straight season.

Cross Country
In their first season as members of the MAC, the men’s team finished sixth at the MAC Championships. Frank Redmond finished 18th at the MAC’s to earn second-team honors. He was the men’s team’s top finisher in all nine of their races. Redmond was named team MVP for the second time.

Golf
The men’s golf team finished 9-3 overall. Bucky Aeppli earned second-team All-Freedom honors to lead the golf team at the Freedom Championships.

Lacrosse
In their second season, the men’s lacrosse team finished 3-12 overall.

Soccer
In their first season as a member of the Freedom Conference, the Cougars finished 14-4-3 and became the first Misericordia team to win a Freedom Conference championship MU reached the postseason for the 14th time in 16 trips and made their second appearance in the NCAA Championships.
Cody Hack, Tyler Mensch, Max Campbell and Cody Harman were first-team All-Freedom selections. Hack became the first Misericordia player to earn Freedom Player of the Year honors.
Joe Scanlon and Andrew Loyd made the second team. Loyd was the MVP of the Freedom championship match.
Chuck Edkins was named Freedom Coach of the Year. He has a career record of 198-121-21.
Hack was named team MVP, and Campbell earned the Coach’s Award.

Swimming
Along with finishing 8-3 overall, the men's swim team also finished third at the Middle Atlantic Conference Championships.
Mitch Finch, Jeff Clark, Eric Schollmeyer and Greg Vossler finished second in the 200 medley relay.
Clark won the 100 and 200 breaststroke at the MACs and set a CYC pool record in the 200 and Vossler won the 50 free.
Clark led the men's team in scoring for the second straight season.
The team set 10 school records.
Clark was named team MVP for the second straight year. Vossler earned the Coach's Award.

Tennis
In their first season, the men’s tennis team finished 6-7 overall.

Track and Field
Frank Redmond led the men's track & field team with a pair of top-five finishes at the MAC Championships. Ryan Garges won the 3000m steeplechase to lead the men's track & field team. Garges set a school record at 10:00.7. Redmond finished second in his heat of at 800m while setting a new school record (1:53.7) and narrowly missing the NCAA qualifying time.

WOMEN’S SPORTS

Basketball
In their first season in the Freedom Conference, the Cougars finished 13-13 (8-8) and hosted a first-round playoff game.
Lacey DeGraw was a second-team All-Freedom Conference selection. DeGraw was the team MVP and Lindsey Sykes received the Coach's Award.

Cross Country
In their first season as members of the MAC, the women’s team finished third at the MAC Championships. Ali Ostrum and Megan Dreabit finished fifth and sixth, respectively, in the women’s race.
Aimee DiLucido made second-team All-MAC in 20th place.
Dreabit earned All-Region honors with a 20th place finish at the NCAA D-III Mideast Regionals.
Ostrum (19:08, 7th) and Dreabit (19:27, 10th) both cracked the all-time top-10 list.
Ostrum was named team MVP for the third straight year. Maura O’Rourke earned the Coach’s Award.

Field Hockey
In their first season in the Freedom Conference, the Misericordia University field hockey team finished 13-8 and qualified for the postseason.
The Cougars also earned an ECAC South playoff berth.
MU reached the postseason for the 15th time in 16 years.
Jamie Wargo was a first-team All-Freedom selection.
Heather DiMenno and Laura Leighow made the All-Freedom second team.
Ellen Howanitz was named team MVP, and Wargo earned the Coach’s Award.

Lacrosse
The women’s lacrosse team finished 4-13 overall. Nicole DeAngelis, a sophomore, led the women’s lacrosse team in scoring with 43 points on 40 goals and three assists, including a 12-point (10g, 2a) performance in a win over King’s.
Wargo, a two-time team MVP, recently completed one of the most successful careers in Misericordia women’s lacrosse history. A two-sport standout, Wargo was a four-year letter winner in field hockey and was a first-team All-Freedom conference selection as a senior.

Soccer
Misericordia University finished 5-14 in their first season in the Freedom Conference (1-7).
The Cougars played the toughest schedule in school history and recorded wins over regionally-ranked opponents Richard Stockton and Muhlenberg.
Ashley McDonnell was a second-team All-Freedom selection. McDonnell was also named team MVP, and Jemila Najjar-Keith received the Coach’s Award.

Softball
The softball team won their second consecutive ECAC South championship at Juniata.
Misericordia finished 25-14, including an 11-5 mark in the Freedom Conference. Three members of the Misericordia University softball team have been named to the All-Freedom Conference team.
Nicole Hoskins was named to the first-team at catcher while Hollie Sarnak was a first-team choice at third base. Courtney Novajosky was a second-team selection in the outfield.

Swimming
The women's swim team won the Middle Atlantic Conference Championship.
Abby Kocon, Amanda McHugh, Chelsea Mixon and Alicia Bryk, defended MU's title in the 200 free relay. MU also won the women's 200 and 400 medley relays and the 400 free relay. Kocon and Bryk finished 1-2 in the 50 and 100 free. Michelle Lacroce and Crissy Condus finished 2-3 in the 100 fly. Kocon, Jessica Grant and Mixon were 2-3-5 in the 200 free. Grant was second in the 1650 and third in the 500. She was named MAC Rookie of the Year.
The women's team set eight school records. Kocon led the women's team in scoring and was named team MVP. Juliann McBride earned the Coach's Award.

Tennis
The Misericordia University women’s tennis team made its Freedom Conference debut with a 13-2/6-1 record, including an eight-match win streak. The Cougars set a school record for wins in a season. The team also finished second in the Freedom Conference and qualified for the team championships in April. Lauren Verret reached the MAC semifinals at sixth singles. Maura Haupt and Courtney Otto advanced to the MAC semis at second doubles.
Courtney Otto was named team MVP. Ashley Mangabang received the Coach’s Award.

Track and Field
Susan Bochnovich and Shannon Kane both won individual titles to lead the Misericordia University women's track & field team at the MAC Championships at Elizabethtown. No further information was available at press time.

Volleyball
The Cougars finished 15-11 in their first season in the Freedom Conference (3-5). Amy Porambo was named team MVP, and Michelle DiCicco received the Coach’s Award.
The Cougars got off to an 11-3 start, including a runner-up finish at the King’s Tournament. DiCicco finished among the top-10 all-time at MU in hitting percentage (.207), kills (633) and blocks (120). Her 49 aces was the 10th best single-season total in school history.
Porambo was eighth in single-season digs (372) and ninth in career aces per game (.35).

Cheerleading
The Misericordia University cheerleaders finished first at the Complete Cheer and Dance's Maui Madness Championships at Temple University.
Team captain Brittany McCauley spearheaded the effort with her energy and leadership skills. In addition to winning the All-Girl College Division, the MU squad was presented with a specialty award for Best Cheer of the day.
